Outpatient Mental Health Services

GatorCare members are eligible to receive outpatient mental health services such as counseling and psychiatry, as a covered benefit. To learn more about tier-one covered providers and locations, please review the information below.

Counseling/Therapy

If you are experiencing symptoms of sub-optimal mental health, such as excessive worry or fear, feeling excessively sad or low, extreme mood changes, changes in sleep or eating habits, loss of interest in hobbies or activities, or guilt, you may benefit from mental health counseling.

Counseling (also known as therapy) does not involve the prescribing of medication. Rather, therapy involves communicating with your provider to establish your mental health goals and then using evidenced-based treatments to improve your psychological and emotional well-being.

GatorCare members have access to licensed mental health counselors through UF Health, New Directions Behavioral Health, and Talkspace. Additionally, all UF and UF Health employees have access to licensed counselors through their respective Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). View the chart below for a summary of the services offered.

Information regarding provider locations and phone numbers can be found on the GatorCare Provider Directories. Additional information regarding each provider can be found on their webpages using the links below.

Psychiatry

If you are experiencing persistent and pervasive symptoms of psychological distress, psychiatry services may benefit you. Psychiatry is the branch of medicine devoted to the study and treatment of mental health conditions. Psychiatrists are able to prescribe medications that may help with your mental health symptoms and recommend concordant treatments.

A referral from your primary care physician is usually required to see a psychiatrist. However, GatorCare members are eligible to engage in telehealth appointments with a dedicated, licensed psychiatrist through Talkspace. Additionally, tier-one psychiatry services are available through UF Health Psychiatry and New Directions Behavioral Health Services.

View the chart below for a summary of covered psychiatry services.
