As the weather starts to warm up, staying hydrated matters more than we tend to think about. Most people associate dehydration with feeling extremely thirsty, but it usually shows up before that point. By the time you notice thirst, your body may already be a little low on fluids.
Dehydration is easy to miss, especially when you are moving through a busy day. It can blend into how you are already feeling, leaving you more tired than usual, slightly off, or not as focused as you normally would be. It is one of those things that seems simple, but it can really affect how you feel day to day.
The Signs You Overlook
You might be dehydrated if you notice low energy, headaches, trouble focusing, dry mouth or lips, darker yellow urine, or random cravings, especially for sweets. One of the easiest ways to check is by looking at your urine color. Pale yellow usually means you are well hydrated, while darker yellow can be a sign that you need to drink more.
More Than Just Water

There is no one exact number that works for everyone when it comes to hydration. Needs change depending on your activity level, the weather, and your routine. According to Mayo Clinic, a general guideline is around 11 to 15 cups of fluid per day, including both drinks and water-rich foods. You may need more if you are active, outside in the heat, or sweating more than usual. Instead of focusing too much on the number, it is more helpful to drink water consistently throughout the day.

It is easy to assume that anything you drink helps with hydration, but that is not always true. Energy drinks, for example, are often marketed as a quick boost, but they are not meant to hydrate your body. Many contain caffeine and added sugars that can work against hydration when you rely on them too often.
Sports drinks were designed for athletes doing long, intense workouts. For most people, especially during a typical workday, they are not necessary. Popular options like Gatorade, BodyArmor, and electrolyte mixes such as Liquid IV are often marketed as everyday hydration solutions, but they are designed to replace fluids and electrolytes lost through heavy sweating during prolonged activity.
These drinks are most useful during exercise that lasts longer than about 60 minutes or involves significant sweating. Outside of those situations, they tend to add extra sugar or sodium without much benefit, and water is usually enough to stay properly hydrated.
Coffee and tea can still count toward your daily fluid intake, and moderate amounts do not typically cause dehydration, but water is still the most reliable option.
Hydration also comes from the foods you eat. Fruits and vegetables can make a difference, especially during warmer months. Foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, strawberries, and lettuce all have high water content and can help support hydration throughout the day.
Staying hydrated does not have to be complicated. Keeping a water bottle nearby, taking a few sips between tasks or meetings, or drinking water with meals can make it easier to stay consistent.
If You want to mix it up
If plain water gets repetitive, infused water is an easy way to add flavor without added sugars. It is simply water combined with fresh fruits, herbs, or spices, and letting it sit for a few hours can naturally enhance the taste.
Cucumber Cooler
Light and refreshing, cucumber adds a crisp flavor and can make water feel more cooling, especially on warmer days.
Citrus Water
A bright citrus mix that adds a boost of vitamin C and a more flavorful alternative to plain water.
Pineapple Ginger Infusion
Slightly sweeter with a hint of spice, this combination can feel more satisfying while still being refreshing. Ginger and mint can also support digestion.
Berry Herb Refresher
Simple fruit-based options that add natural sweetness and make it easier to drink more water throughout the day.
