Supporting Men’s Health Awareness Year-Round: A Message from UF Health and GatorCare

As Men’s Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re sharing a powerful conversation with two of our own team members: Michael Holmes, UF Health SVP and Greater Gainesville Regional President, and Abi Loose, Wellness Supervisor with the GatorCare team.

This video highlights a meaningful discussion on men’s health, including mental well-being and preventive care, with a call to continue the dialogue well beyond the month of June.

Key Takeaways from the Conversation:

Preventive Care Can Save Lives

Men are encouraged to stay up to date with preventive screenings such as prostate and colon cancer checks, cholesterol and blood pressure tests, and routine wellness visits. Early detection is critical, especially since men usually have shorter lifespans than women and face higher risks from heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries.

Mental Health Is Just as Important as Physical Health

Men are just as likely to experience mental health challenges as women, but they are less likely to seek help. As a result the suicide rate among men is significantly higher. It is unbelievably important to have open discussions, reducing stigma, and encouraging men to ask for help.

GatorCare supports men’s mental health through services like Talkspace, which offers free and unlimited virtual counseling and psychiatry.

GatorCare Offers Support All Year Long

GatorCare’s wellness programs are available year-round to support the health of all team members and their families. These include personal health coaching, nutrition counseling, fitness classes, and mental health resources designed to help individuals stay proactive and accountable about their well-being.
