Join this January trend!

Each new January brings a new set of resolutions for most people centered around health and wellness.
A newer resolution trend that has gained traction is “Dry January” which is 31 days of no alcohol. The post-holiday sobriety challenge got its start in the United Kingdom in 2013 and each year has gained more participants. A study done in 2023 noted that about 41% of U.S. adults intended to attempt a Dry January. Going alcohol free in January or any other month can provide health and wellness benefits that can be long lasting.
Short Term Benefits of Alcohol Avoidance
Studies have shown that those who regularly consumed alcohol and took a month-long break showed improvements in weight, blood pressure and liver function. Patients not only lost weight but also had improved insulin resistance which influences hunger and feelings of fullness. In addition, a decrease in liver inflammation also lowered the risk of developing fatty liver disease.
Although many use alcohol as a sleep aid, it can also cause disruptions in sleep quality and quantity. Those who took a break from alcohol experienced better sleep as well as decreased hangover-related anxiety and irritability.
Long Term Benefits of Alcohol Avoidance
Complete avoidance of alcohol can also offer a range of health benefits for the long term. Extended abstinence from alcohol can reduce the risk of certain cancers, infections, and obesity. Long term improvements in diabetic complications may also be seen as alcohol often contains higher sugar content along with empty calories, significantly reducing intake can improve insulin efficiency. In addition, reducing alcohol can also reduce blood pressure and the risk of abnormal heart rhythms.

Share with Others
A support system can help with staying accountable and on track with goals. Also, friends and family may also find the challenge easier to accomplish with a buddy.

Be Ready for Triggers
Think about how to handle situations where alcohol is the main focal point. Plan to enjoy alcohol free beverages and practice how to say “NO” without feeling guilty.

Switch It Out
Switch out alcohol for something healthier such as a small fruit, favorite hobby or even a special treat.

Be Aware
Even though you may not feel as if the amount of alcohol you consume is significant, Dry January may reveal your relationship with alcohol so it is important to monitor for signs of withdrawal such as anxiety, shaky hands, headache or even more severe symptoms such as hallucinations, delirium, racing heart rate or fever. If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical attention.
